As a mechanical engineering student, I completed a 3-month internship with the NGO Precious Plastic Mauritius. I discovered this opportunity through a student who had taken part in the program the previous year, and I was immediately drawn to it.
My tasks were varied: I designed plastic injection molds, drafted user manuals for the NGO’s machinery, and worked on optimizing team workflows, such as creating a custom cap-sorting table. I also designed and produced cap collection boxes for public spaces, and contributed to the maintenance of the hub, notably renovating the steps of the main container.
This three-month immersion at Precious Plastic Mauritius gave me firsthand insight into the operations and inner dynamics of a dedicated NGO. It exposed me directly to the reality of plastic pollution in an island setting like Mauritius, highlighting the urgent need for local awareness. On a technical level, this internship strengthened and expanded my engineering skill set, particularly in mold design, manufacturing processes, workshop skills like welding, as well as concrete construction management.
